Can insurance be transferred to a new car?
The answer is Yes. Car and motorcycle policies are usually for a 6-month or 12-month term. The policy is on-going during the term of the contract.
If you buy a car or motorcycle you will need to call your agent and add the vehicle to the policy. The vehicle would be pro-rated from the date you add it to the end of the policy period. That means the insurance company will charge you only the difference from when you added the vehicle until the expiration date. You will also receive a multi-car discount which reduces the total premium for both vehicles.
Again, you are not starting a new policy, you are amending or endorsing the existing policy.
Questions the agent will have or items the agent will need:
- A copy of the current registration or bill of sale.
- Replacing vehicle or just adding?
- Coverage changes?
- Current miles on vehicle?
- Date purchased?
- Condition of vehicle?
- Lienholder/bank name and address, (if any).
The agent will need to take a picture of the vehicle or make a visual inspection.
You will be provided with a new proof of insurance card, which must be carried in the car at all times.
If you have a question or comment contact your agent or this author.
