California Auto Insurance Consumer Guidelines
The following are the minumum legal requirements for getting auto insurance in California:
· Minimum bodily injury liability per person in an accident: $15,000
· Minimum bodily injury liability per accident: $30,000
· Minimum liability for property damage in an accident: $5,000
· Uninsured motorist coverage is NOT required
· California is NOT a “no-fault” state
Rank yourself according to the risks listed below. This is not a checklist for how insurance companies rate your risk level. There are many other factors. Keep in mind, each insurance company has their own underwriting practices.
You’re considered a “preferred risk” driver if you can answer yes to the following questions:
· No accidents or moving violations in the last 3 years
· No license suspensions or major violations
· Continuous insurance with no lapse or terminations
· Age: 25 years old or more.
You’re considered a “standard risk” driver if you can answer yes to the following questions:
· 1 moving violation or 1 “at-fault” accident with property damage only in the last 3 years
· No license suspensions or major violations
· Age: 21 years old or more.
You’re considered a “high risk” driver if you have one or more of these characteristics:
· 2 or more moving violations or 1 or more “at fault” accidents involving injury in the last 3 years
· License suspensions, major violations
· Lapses in insurance coverage
· 18-21 years old
